Andor fans’ Luthen lightsaber theory explored

While most fans associate the thrills of Star Wars with the big screen, the franchise’s more recent home on Disney+ has proven that episodic adventures can be just as magnificent as the blockbusters. The Mandalorian, The Book Of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, they’ve all been must-see events for those invested in the iconic sci-fi property, but Andor? It may be the most special of the shows yet.

Created by Tony Gilroy for the aforementioned streaming platform, it serves as a prequel to the 2016 movie Rogue One, focusing a lens on Diego Luna’s titular character as a thief-turned-Rebel-spy.

We’ve met a handful of exciting new characters and amongst them, we have Luthen Rael (played by Stellan Skarsgård), who is introduced as Caleen’s dealer contact and part of the Rebel Alliance.

As the series has progressed, further intrigue has been stirred, but episode 11 takes things one step further, with fans arguing that Luthen has a lightsaber in Andor

WARNING: EPISODE 11 SPOILERS

Andor fans’ Luthen lightsaber theory

One of the major plot points in episode 11 falls upon Saw Gerrera’s (Forest Whitaker) decision to get involved and comply with Kreegyr’s attack on Spellhaus.

However, Luthen advises him against it and one sequence when he’s being checked over by Gerrera’s guard reveals a mysterious object in Luthen’s possession. It’s never explicitly addressed what it is but many fans are speculating that Luthen has a lightsaber in Andor.

If it is then this marks the first appearance of the iconic Jedi weapon in the series. Indeed, it is the right shape and a number of details surrounding the character suggest that he could be a Jedi; appearance and dress, residing on Coruscant, etc.

On the other hand, there are reasons to reject the theory that it’s a lightsaber. Firstly, it’s unlikely that the guards would’ve allowed him through with such a deadly weapon following a search. The precautionary check is there for a reason. However, the guard looked suspicious and was perhaps too afraid to challenge Luthen, aware that the weapon would make him a powerful foe to cross. You could argue on either side.

Secondly, to critique the theory, it’s unlikely that the first reveal of a lightsaber would be brushed off so easily, and it’s more likely that such a reveal would be reserved for a more momentous and pivotal sequence; perhaps in the finale.

Although the object’s shape is similar to a lightsaber, it could just as easily be a spyglass or baton of some kind, as it does still look different from most lightsabers in terms of color and material.

It may just be a cheeky little nod to grab the audience’s attention, potentially with the desired effect of foreshadowing a lightsaber in the finale, or Luthen being confirmed as Jedi.

‘Is that a lightsaber?’

Not only are a number of viewers arguing in favor of the lightsaber theory, but they’re also suggesting that Luthen has a lightsaber ship during the escape from an Imperial patrol.
