The 33rd annual GLAAD Media Awards took place in Los Angeles on Saturday. There, a certain well-known two-time Survivor player and prominent LGBT activist got engaged to his boyfriend, actor Nico Santos, in a very public marriage proposal.

JOY – Formerly known as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation – is a non-governmental media monitoring organization founded in 1985 to combat discrimination against the LGBT community in the entertainment industry. On Saturday April 2nd, the 33rd Annual Presentation in Los Angeles the awards ceremony, and it was there that Survivor alumnus Zeke Smith, who has since become a passionate advocate for the LGBT community, proposed to his longtime friend, the actor Nico Santos. Santos accepted and the two are now engaged.

Santos also posted a photo of the two on Instagram just before the ceremony started, writing: “At the [GLAAD Awards] with my husband [Zeke] on the one hand and my social anxiety on the other 😂🥴.”

The two have been together since at least 2020, when Santos said Variety that the two have been quarantining together during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. “I’m quarantining here at home with my boyfriend, which is great,” Santos said. “I am so thankful and thankful that he is here with me. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have survived the last few weeks without him.”

Smith & Santos are both well-known LGBT activists

Smith, 34, first appeared in 2016’s 33rd season of “Survivor,” Millennials vs. Gen X, where he placed 9th. There he was assimilated into the tribe of “millennials” and was open about being a gay man. It wasn’t until the following year (though only a few months later, filming wise) in Season 34, Game Changers, that he was notoriously outed by candidate Jeff Varner as transgender. Varner’s actions were severely castigated by host Jeff Probst, fellow contestants and audience alike when it aired a few months later. Since then, Smith has been open about both his gay and transgender identities and has become a strong advocate for LGBT rights and representation.

As a matter of fact, at the reunion show of the season In 2017, Smith spoke about how he started working with and partnering with GLAAD Nick Adamsthen the Director of Transgender Media & Representation. Smith said of his time on the show and how it impacted his life at the reunion:

Santos, 42, is an actor who was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the United States when he was 16. Openly gay, he gained international recognition after playing Oliver T’sien in the 2018 romantic comedy.Crazy rich Asians.” Like Santos, Oliver is also gay.
